Keeping Toddlers and Preschoolers Occupied on a Road Trip

Toddlers and preschoolers can be a bit challenging when required to sit through a long car trip. They generally require a significant amount of wiggle time throughout the day. Carefully plan each leg of your trip to include picnics at local playgrounds or grassy rest stops where kids can run and play.

Pack:

  • Plenty of snacks as this crowd can be very demanding when their tummies are empty.
  • Beverages, water is ideal as it isn’t sticky when spilled and can be used in a pinch to wash hands, faces and clothing.
  • Baby wipes are also good for quick clean up.
  • Several interesting books. Most toddlers enjoy looking at picture books and some preschoolers are able to read. So stock up on a few good books.
  • Drawing pad, coloring book, colored pencils, view masters and small dolls or toy trucks.
  • Stories on CD or a few favorite DVD’s and a portable DVD player can be a lifesaver on extended road trips.
  • Small surprise treasures are also handy diversions when little ones become restless. Wrapping them provides added interest and buys a few extra moments of peace.
  • Remember a security blanket or a special snuggly can still be an essential item at this age.
