To DVD, or not to DVD: that is the question.
Lots of parents have come to rely on the portable DVD player. Many wouldn’t consider traveling without one. Some ask, “Why would anyone not bring along their portable and a few DVD’s to keep the kids entertained?”
No doubt portable DVD players, iPods, MP3 players and other electronics serve to occupy the kids and they can limit the stress of an already anxiety provoking situation. And yet travel provides us with one of those rare opportunities to connect with our kids without the distraction of work or household demands.
Once we’ve checked in for our flight, or settled in for a long ride, we can give our kids our undivided attention. Encouraging discussion, playing their favorite game with them – or teaching them a new game, can go a long way toward strengthening the emotional bond between you and your child.
It will take a bit of effort, but turning off your cell phone and focusing on your kids shows them that they are important to you. Allowing them to plug in certainly is easier, but the rewards of investing the energy it takes to connect with your child will pay off in the future.
