Packing an Infant Up for the Road
When it is time to hit the road for a family trip, new parents often find themselves at a loss on what to bring. Just how much of the nursery really needs to come along for the ride and how much can be safely left behind are questions that can present a real quandary.
If you prefer economy over abundance, there are a few items you will want to make certain to have with you on the road ahead. For as tiny as they are, newborns can, in fact, require a lot of luggage. Make sure to include these things on your must-bring list and you should have your bases covered:
Diapering supplies – Diapers, wipes, powder and rash ointment can all be very important to have in abundance. If you do forget something, do not fret too much on this front. These items are very easy to pick up almost anywhere.
Bedding – While a crib might be waiting for you baby at your destination, a portable playpen and bedding for it can still come in handy. You cannot always be sure of the safety of provided items, but you can take comfort in your own playpen. Portable playpens can fold up rather nicely to fit in most car trunks, too.
Toys – If your baby is a little older than a newborn, a favorite toy or toys should also be considered. Making sure to bring at least a few familiar, but small, toys can help your baby feel more comfortable and at home while on the road.
Bottles, food and other supplies – Make sure to have the right gear along to make sure baby gets fed. Formula, disposable bottle liners and bottled nursery water can make feedings at rest stops go much easier. Trusting tap water on the road is just not something you are going to want to do with a newborn.
Emergency items – Make sure to pack an emergency kit with a thermometer, bandages, pain reliever and any medications your child might be taking.
Going on the road for the first time as a new parent can be a little daunting. You do not have to pack the entire nursery to ensure your baby will be happy away from home. A few strategic items, however, can make a huge difference for you and your child.
