Have a Safe Trip
It goes without saying that a day trip, or any other kind of trip undertaken in a car, has a safety plan that should always be stuck to regardless of any other consideration. Children may have a desire to roam wild and free, but they need to be kept under control in order to make sure that they do not put themselves at any risk. Although they may not like this, it is important to have some ground rules for your children to follow.
1) Seatbelts must be worn at all times when the car is in motion. Although this can be a little restrictive, your example will be important in keeping your children aware. With any luck, the seatbelt will not have to do its job, but if for any reason you have to stop suddenly no-one wants to learn the hard way what a seatbelt does.
2) When out of the car, parents must stay close to their children at all times. You may tell your children the vice versa of this – to keep close to you – but they may not be terribly attentive so it is better to remove any doubt by keeping close to them.
3) If your car has a child lock (and most of them do), make sure it is enabled at all times. Some children cannot see a button without wanting to press it, nor a lever without wanting to pull it. Sometimes they will do it completely without intending to. But keeping the doors locked in the back is essential.
