In For the Long Haul
Long trips by car are not to everyone’s taste. A road trip might sound like Heaven to the average college student or anyone of a like mind over a certain age. However, children have a shorter attention span and being stuck in a seat for a period which can sometimes exceed a quarter of a day is not their idea of unending joy. It is just their idea of unending.
If you are going somewhere that is a distance away, then you will have to accept that there will be some tendency on behalf of your younger passengers for their minds to wander, their patience to sap and their temper to fray. A good trip for the family depends very much on enabling your children to enjoy themselves.
The difficulty of making sure children enjoy a trip comes with the fact that getting a balance is difficult. If you do not want your children to get bored, providing toys and games may seem like a good idea. However, the danger is that their excitement can escalate into belligerence and make it difficult to have as good a time as you hoped.
Giving some thought to how to do this requires patience of your own. Crossword puzzles, although old-fashioned, are often a good way of getting children to sit quietly and pass time. Breaking the trip up can also work well, although stopping too often can be detrimental to the chances of arriving at your destination without tears being shed. Try to get a firm schedule in place, but make it sound as natural as possible.
