Preparing Your Child For A Ride On The Train
Taking a train to get to and from your family vacation destination is an excellent way to go. After all, most children are absolutely enamored by trains. Courtesy of some of the most popular television shows for youngsters, trains are almost people in their eyes.
Just because a train ride sounds “cool,” however, does not mean that you can expect a smooth ride ahead. To play it safe, it is a good idea to make sure you prepare youngsters for the ride. Doing these things can help you ensure a good trip on the train:
- Explain what will happen – Even with toddlers, it can help to explain what they can expect from the ride. Let them know what the noises are and what to expect during stops where they might not be getting off. Also, prepare them for a night in a sleeping car if your trip will involve an overnight stay on the train.
- Pack some activities – Looking out of the window and watching the scenery go by is an awesome activity, but only for a while. After a bit, kids will be kids and they will need something else to do. Be ready by having games, books, toys or music packed and easily accessible.
- Help them stretch their legs – It is hard for little ones to sit still for an entire train ride. Plan a walk to the dining car or let them get up and stretch a bit every hour or so. As long as it is safe to do so, a little walk can help burn off their energy and keep them behaving better longer.
Traveling by train can prove to be a relaxing adventure for the whole family. Just be sure the youngsters know what to expect and help them enjoy the ride better by making accommodations for their energy.
