“Mommy I have to go to the bathroom!”
It never fails. Whether boarding a plane for a transatlantic flight or driving onto the freeway at the start of a road trip, little ones are always on their own schedule. So what’s a harried parent to do? No one told you that juggling latte, luggage and toddler would take a PhD, but at times it feels that way!
Plan A would include a stop at the facilities before embarking on a trip. Plan B might include pleading with the airline attendant or pulling out a bag full of tricks aimed at distracting the “have-to-go’s”. I know one mom who, in desperation, strapped a diaper on an already potty-trained toddler. The best option however is to slow down, allow plenty of time for necessary stops and to budget a few extra minutes for the unexpected.
The night before your trip help your child select their clothes and lay them out for quick changing in the morning. Stock your carry-on bag with snacks and a few small toys. Set aside time to grab a latte and to stop at the bathroom before departure.
If all else fails, pack an extra diaper.
