Test the Waters with Day Trips

Taking newborns or toddlers on long car trips can be a very intimidating experience. If your children have never traveled and you just do not know what to expect out of them in the car, you can prepare yourself and them by taking shorter trips to test the waters.

Day trips in the car can be an excellent way to gear everyone up for longer, extended vacations. They can also help you see if you and your children have the patience to handle hitting the road. In addition, they provide a great way to gauge what you might want to add to preparations for a longer ride.

If trial day trips sound like a plan for testing the waters, start out slow. Consider visiting a park, restaurant or other destination an hour or two from your home. See how the kids do and pay attention to what they actually require during the course of travel. If all goes well after an outing or two, pick a destination a little farther away.

Keep in mind that car travel can be intimidating for your child as well as you. Plan relatively frequent stops to hold a newborn or let a toddler get out and stretch. Patience is key here. Chances are if you get them used to the car on a daytrip or two, longer rides will be a breeze.

Hitting the road is different with a little one in tow. Day trips can prepare you all by giving you a good way to get used to the idea that still provides you with an easy escape back to the comfort of your own home.
